Just finished a pub match actually, and you are right in saying Omni is an essential.
This was my team set-up:
.Sven
.Omni
.Axe
.Magnus
.Juggernaut
Sadly, when we beat the game the screen cut back to the menu in a split second, so I'm not sure if we got any extra Shards. Really fustrating bug. But my misery aside, this was my team's winning set-up.
Its possible for really excellent players to win without Omni, but most people will not do well because they will die too much. Omni allows you to correct a lot of mistakes.
Axe is the best hero for the early levels. Drow and Sven are the best for the later levels when you need some serious dps. Shadow Shaman makes the Pudge level a lot easier but is almost a liability the rest of the time.
Magic stick is great for the slardar level. Also your game will be a lot easier if someone picks up a medallion to take out the big monsters a lot faster.
I always pick Omni to keep everyone alive. His Ult is a nifty little panic button. If the team is all DPSers, how would each person stay alive? Stack on salves???? Kite? Any more tactics suggestions?
Basically they just kite more skillfully. Shadow Fiend in particular is a dramatically different hero for WK games if you are very good at it. A bad SF will just feed, while a good SF is very powerful.
how they all survive ? 11 second windrun son u get that at level 7 it has 14 second cooldown so its only 3 seconds downtime from physical immunity
what item is better for omni.. usually i go for arcane boot 2 > meka > refresher > aghanim / vlad
I think Arcane 2 and Vlads are very important. Besides that idk if it matters much, I've seen a lot of things work. I like to get medallion, AC, and Shivas. Armor is very important when the creeps do nearly all physical dmg. Any magic dmg they do can be dodged. Heart is also convenient so you can repel and stand to resurrect anyone despite masses of creeps and not worry about getting low.
we tried mag + drow + wr + sf + omni on new game ++.
took only awhile to kill the bosses.
We built ac deso medallion orchid and vlad.
SF is a must for new game ++ for the minus armor, believe me you gonna need that aura of his
finished WN with Axe, Omni, Drow, WR and SK. Everyone bitched at SK for not going with Sven, but he did ok and his stun and ulti were helpful. I found bloodstone on drow was really useful for mana and at early stages used the mana boots for team benefit too before disassembling them. Got yasha and daedalus ofc, but went radiance too at the end since I had pots of cash and everything seemed to be chasing me. Interesting build but worked a treat in this mode.
We won with Jakiro, Sven, Drow, Sand King, and Venomancer. It's really hard to lose if you're at all competent about kiting.
The following is from a reddit thread ( http://www.reddit.com/r/DotA2/comments/1t0btk/extreme_tips_for_wraith_night_for_teams_that_wish/ ), and not my own:
"There is a major bug that people are using to farm shards that I should probably mention as it has been buried so it can't get fixed.
When you kill the Wraith King and the screen comes up, if 4 or less players hit yes and then open console and use the "disconnect" command, when the final player hits yes after the rest have left, they will rejoin with their items and levels." So, you beat normal, then do that, and you start the next round with all your levels and items ready to go.
More "extreme tips" from reddit:
"Have a teammate build a helm of the dominator, then get him to drop it on the floor. Your team should each pick it up once then drop it again. There will be a lifesteal buff on you.
Drow's Quelling Arrow (split shot) applies attack modifiers if you orb-attack with it (read: press W, click ground) meaning that it can proc lifesteal and MAELSTROM (making slark-dar wave a piece of cake)
The bottom side appears to have three lanes: you can actually make the left side easier by moving further down to just outside the tower where the creeps come out of 2 "holes" next to each other. Best place for axe and omni to lane at for non-kited waves, and has 2 lane's worth of exp to be fair to the team.
Drow's quelling shot may stack all on the same target if you hit close enough, use this to your advantage by moving in closer to targets especially bosses - effectively 500%++ damage
You may sell the potions you pick up from the ground for additional gold
Arcane Boots II can be disassembled to cast a second arc due to different cooldowns (credit: http://www.reddit.com/r/DotA2/comments/1sylkh/quick_tip_you_can_disassemble_arcane_boots_ii_to/)
The final boss skills can be blocked by magic immunity, so have omni cast repel on your best damage dealer
Omni's ultimate heals towers in addition to shielding them (along with heroes)
Omni's ultimate summons guardian angels ON TOP OF ILLUSIONS AS WELL (manta-stacking is a legit build just for the 350 x 2 more damage from guardian angels for final boss)
Magic sticks gain charges for some mob skills (mini slarks, prophets/giant tree, roshlings, leshracs)
Do not attempt to revive team members who are dead on roshan wave if there are too many around, it'll hasten your loss. Just kite them as much as you can
Legion commander's ultimate also works with illusions, increasing its potency (Credit: http://www.reddit.com/r/DotA2/comments/1szi0d/a_small_bug_we_found_during_wraithnight_legion/)"

I think Omni Knight is a must in your team.
Items I got on him:
Arcane Boots II
Channelled Heal Boots
Shiva's Guard
Mekanism
Vladimir's
Halberd
Then I beat the game with my team.
Anyone think Legion's Q works really well in this mode?
Which team combination do you think works best?
Items?
