the no runes rule is kinda bull shit, the point of a 1v1 mid is to practice playing the mid lane and rune control is a big part of how to be successful. Just keep practicing and you will get better
Getting the better block and outfarming the enemy is the biggest and easiest advantage you can get. After that, get in their head, and make them feel like they are losing. Put them on their back foot and they will start getting desperate and make mistakes in attempts to do something crazy.
block, make sure you win the uphill battle. dmg items. nulls/wraths/bracers.
don't like the 1st blood rule since people can fuckup/bounce back, but in such circumstances staying alive is the priority.

So a community I'm a part of recently hosted a 1v1 all mid tournament. It's not over yet, but I did get knocked out. Me and a couple friends call it luck both times to the guy I lost to, but loss is loss. Now the rules were basically: all mid, no jungle, no runes, play same hero, and winner is declared on first blood, first tower, or highest networth at 10 minutes. If you guys were in this situation, how would you do it? The first game I lost was as Tinker(rocket did 2 more hp than I had health, if it didn't was going to soul ring and laser in face to win), the 2nd I lost as Invoker(holy hell I forgot how hard a sunstrike can hit for @.@). Since playing this style of game is very different from a typical game of DotA, I'm looking for tips and recommended items to rush for next time.
