there is an actual rule in english that applies to this
if the letter A is followed by a consonant and then E, it is pronounced "ey"
eg: lame, tape, negate

Basically the rules in English comes down to "what sounds right". I remember when my english teachers would teach us about the right way to go about grammar, and then they'd go "BUT WAIT THERE'S AN EXCEPTION"
