I'm one of those people that calibrated right when they hit level 13 and still didn't know how to play. A year ago I started to try and get it up and honestly the process is just so incredibly slow. Despite the players generally seeming terrible; according to my dotabuff it has taken a full 97 matches to gain a measly ~650 more mmr. Meanwhile I could have just played on a smurf gotten high enough for ranked and calibrated in like 140 games and gained ~1700 more mmr.

I calibrated right when I started and I got 1.5k and now I'm one game away from 2.8k. It's not because I initially deserved 2.8k... I had to work up to it. There's no point unless you're like below 1k. Then, maybe. But even then, if you calibrate that low, it's your fault anyway.

        - it feels a lot more satisfying climbing on your main account
        - i have lots of stuff on this account, I don't want to have to switch accounts just to play dota
        - you're ruining other players games making a smurf

        I climbed from 2.3k to 4.5k so

" you're ruining other players games making a smurf"
If I made a smurf why would that ruin other peoples games?

TELL YOUR GIRL TO WASH HE...

Let's say you play with 9 other legit noobs. The 5 noobs on the other team would have a terrible time playing against a smurf. Nothing like knowing you're already shit at the game and a smurf comes along to further rub that into your face.

^so it's better to slightly stomp a few dozen more games than to fully stomp one before smurf detection raises the bracket? I don't agree

              YB^^

Yeah it's boosters that ruin games not new accounts

when you overcalibrate after stomping a match and you're put with players better than you actually deserve to be with and you bring down their games

You can't overcalibrate. You can just calibrate a bit higher than you actually deserve.

For example I'm 3.9k on main atm, and I calibrated 4.5k on smurf. I wasn't really 4.5k player backthen, probably not even now, but playing in low 4k/high 3k is way easirer now than it used to be for me.

So unless your only goal is to see big number, you'll probably still learn a lot if you're capable of calibrating 4k+ in the first place.

You just have to be open minded and not to bother way too much about what other people say.

Then again, I do agree that abandoning your main is kinda pointless, because why would you do that?

I did made a smurf for example, but after I calibrated and played about 100 games on it I gave it away to 1.4k guy who wanted to play on that account. No point for me playing there, I don't see it at least.

If you can't climb on your main to MMR you got on your SMURF it just means you DONT deserve it.

Yes, of course, you don't hav to calibrate to exact same number, 100-200 MMR difference is okay, but saying that 2k people are 2k because of team-mates or just being unlucky with calibration is 90% wrong.

Exeptions may be found, but are just a few.

After you play 100-150 games you'll probably settle up and have accurate MMR.

                      I dont understand smurfing tbh

My original rating used to be 1.8k, while the highest smurf rating i got was 3.7k ( I even made this a couple of months ago, and I still played pretty bad before I got coached). I may go play on my new VHS account and call it my new main and spend the rest of my dota experince there, but numbers are just numbers, we can all argue about our own practical and personal notions of MMR's utility but the challenge of playing ranked itself is the climb itself. If by hardwork and a lot of perseverance you can actually pull this off and not by mere stat reset I will praise you more than I can do, because you know the purpose of why ranked matchmaking is implemented.

Exactly, I agree with what you said here.

I also calibrated when I was level 13 because I didn't know anything and my friend needed a support for his games. Despite winning 9/10 games I was given 2.2k. But, I knew I wasn't meant to be in that tier and climbed to 5k in less than a year. I did make a smurf to recalibrate my MMR and it got calibrated at 4.7k, but I still prefer using and climbing on my main because all my items and levels and other stuff are there.
