It's pretty much the best build when you are ahead, since noone will ever be able to kill you and given that you are atleast on par with the enemy carry in levels and experience (and therefore far ahead of the enemy supports), there should be no problems with damage.
But to be fair, it is a fighting build, and he is not going to farm with that extremely well, so unless you are fighting everytime Chronosphere is up, he falls off.
I imagine you guys were too passive, put him in a scenario where he doesn't do shit and then blamed him afterwards for having no farm, like most of the 4k trench players do.
I never play HC void, so I don't know the best build, but I can say that the top 20 faceless void users very seldomly build diffusal, manta, linkens. I would of been fine if my HC builds linkens as the 5th or 6th item in conjunction with diffusal/manta.

We fought a lot, and used smoke like 7x.
Just so we are clear, that match was not 4k and none of us flamed anyone in game.
Arc warden and SF were 5.5k. Void was around 5.3k. I myself was 5550 once.
