Don't mute everyone, but one by one, once you notice any of them being toxic. Do not respond or try to analyze what they say, their words have no weight to you. Just mute.
Do not fall into the mistake of responding with insults or anger, just make a note to self "this player is not worth listening to" and play.
Do not waste your reports on them either, because they are scarce and you can't afford to report every toxic dipshit you spot.
Report only the real feeders/abusers, etc.
You don't need to have a good attitude with teammates. Some are going to make mistakes and do the wrong play. This is going to happen, no matter the MMR. But there is NO reason that they have to know you have a bad attitude. There is NOTHING that would constitute you letting your teammates know that you are mad/upset with them.
In terms of picks, if you need a support, get one. A good player playing a 'hard' support (say a Crystal Maiden or Dazzle for example) can carry the game. The same holds true for every other support, semi-carry or not.
Unless they don't stop insulting you and your teammates, don't mute them. You need to play with them, every game doesn't have to be a 1v9, if you communicate with your team, in even a neutral manner, not even a positive manner, games will become 5v5s.
^Because you probably react to them, lower your own morale and waste nervous system resources.

This will disable all chat upon clicking the MOUSE3, you may toggle it on/off by pressing.
Bind it to MOUSE3, because your keyboard is disabled for commands in the picking stage, mouse isn't.
You can mute all in the picking and planning stage with a single button and unmute similarily.
I also have binds for chat messages like "leave my lane please, let me solo". So when I really don't want to talk to my team, I just mute all, unmute, give rapid binded text out and mute all again.
I also frequently use the chat wheel and pings.
You can customize the chat wheel to have only really important stuff, I don't have shit like "GG WP" there.

Pick before them and say you accidentally pick it. The team will rage if they still pick the role.
