It's up to your preference, many people use WASD. I use edge-panning because it's what I'm used to from previous RTS games and I have to press less buttons.
I use WASD for my camera as well. You should focus on your actual game play right now if you want to improve.
I feel like WASD doesn't have a whole lot to do with skill level - just what you are used too.
Most of the pro players use edge-panning because they've always used it in other RTS games, or just learned DotA w/o changing. One day, a new generation player (someone who "always" used WASD) will get to the pros.
It was a thing during DotA where arrow keys were used. But I still prefer mouse for cam movement.
