it's probably not a good idea. If someone first picks invoker, my response is usually to just pick viper and proceed to shit on them.
old viper was good for shitting on voker. new viper is meh as mid solo. He'll get out-csed by voker.
invoker needs a good lane. only firstpick him when you can rely on your supports to rotate and ward mid.
getting trashed in lane = late midas leading into late aghs. until then youre pretty useless.
I disagree, unless you got some nyx shit in the offlane, invoker is pretty hard to counter. His laning goes so-so you can count on a solid invoker to get at least 1 or 2 SS kills.
Then come midas and farming. I've seen good invokers afk jungle farm while sending forge spirit to lane to last hit/ take creep aggro off tower. T1 stays alive awhile. Oh your only 50% health, just switch to quas and regen 30hp a second at lvl 8
Then comes aghs and then the farm party starts and Invoker starts shitting on people in fights.
Heros freaking strong , his winrate reflects how hard he is to master cause in the right hands this hero is a beast. Most people cannot play him well hence the sub 50% wr.

its wrong to pick invoker in general. just dont do it. he is a burden to your team all game long and finally in the lategame where he can start doing things, he dies without buyback and you lose the game.
First picking him is wrong, ur not doing shit lvl 1 to sb and/or any high aggression.
Gl laning against razor, viper, even sf is difficult. Gl surviving against ns or sb or Shaker roaming around, tinker, puck, ogre or bane.

He just always seems to get farm in my games, maybe because its 4k dota.
See if you're sure about your play then it won't matter that much. But if they have a core tinker, viper, brood or silencer player, they'll easily fail you. Trust me, easily
I would personally say the answers lies in the team. I feel invoker needs to have a team centered around him more than most hero would need, another example would probably be alchemist in comparison.
In theory invoker doesn't have a true counter to him. However I feel his make or break point lies on his team rather than the opponents. For invoker to succeed most of the time, you will need very agressive support with reliable lockdowns to help him win his lane and also for kills with sunstrikes. Also invoker is a hero that is very greedy compared to most pos2 out there, maybe just below alchemist, and in most games he will be farming for an aghs for at least the first 15mins and very vulnerable to ganks. But with enough space this magic man is very devastating in every aspect, solo pickoffs to high ground.
In the current meta which favours high tempo games where early skirmishes happens frequently, I feel invoker is a very situational pick, ans hence not a first pick material. The returns are great but the risks are even greater, and it is very easy to exploit the laning phase where invoker is merely a big creep with a global nuke. He is too dependent on getting his aghs and has a very late power spike which is very exploitable in higher level games. Picking a strong laner like TA with a roaming nightstalker will make almost any invoker player tilt by the 4th minute into the game.
But then again, look at Sumiya. If you are that confident I don't see a problem.

Every game I’ve been against Invoker mid there hasn’t been a single gank on him and he just sits there with his 130 damage because of exhort denying and csing. If you stay in the lane he denies everything and if you leave the lane he immediately pushes and takes your tower. Meanwhile he can sit there and cast sunstrike if fights are happening on the other side of the map.
Then people on my team wonder why they lose.
Invoker often gets first picked in my games anyway. So do it. But no guarantees of success. Yea pa would destroy you but I'd doubt ppl actually bother counter picking. Usually it's sf mid right after the invoker
Sf can easily kill invoker at lvl 3 and invoker at no point in lane can truly contest his cs
sf can usually bully invoker out of the lane
Against pa just get wand and cold snap meteor if she tries to go on u, go equal in quas and exort for extra Regen and u good.
Most of invoker's counters r supports imo, and most of the cores who shit on him in lane lose to him later.
ive had games where invoker buys 3 rings of protection, 1 of which he turns into aquila and he still manages to feed pa xD
dont get me wrong tho, i do lose to pa as invoker, just not in laning phase

Voker commands a lot of attention when you first pick him. If you're good enough to ignore that attention, go ahead. Personally, when I see Invo get first picked, I go for one of his lane counters, like Razor, BS(this one isn't as good since removing PMS), OD, etc. I'm a shitstain counterpicker that way.
Invoker is one of the most contested heroes. If you don't pick him first, you might not be able to.

^I don't see how some of us have pointed out wrong stuff. We may have differing opinions but that's how things are like in our own respective brackets.
