Whilst pretty new here, I've been a top 100 ranked mid player in hon for a long time. The biggest thing, and something I've just only now learnt, is that:
a) early hero kills (or deaths) are worth very little;
b) killing the enemy mid lane is reasonably difficult due to how short the lane is; and
c) that rotating for early ganks is generally a waste of time and inefficient
The overall conclusion is that dominating the lane through cs and deny, forcing the enemy out of the lane, and pushing the tower are paramount. Kills come mostly from the enemy having to take risks and misplaying (taking risks because they are behind). If you need to sacrifice too much for an early kill, generally not worth it.
Would welcome someone more experienced here to correct or confirm.
True, they nerfed early kill gold so much that its not worth it, its sometime even worse cause they come back with full mana and can get a counter kill. Its much better to force him back to heal than actually killing.

Force back to heal hurts his gold and xp. Killing him and forcing him to watch his respawn timer hurts his confidence.
i actually almost threw a game as SF by diving sniper through his t1 tower to t2 tower (with my creepwave, killing him) - even thoguh i got out, i ended up being lower HP/mana than him, and i couldnt force him out of lane anymore - he recovered.
that my friends, is why high tier mids have salves/mangos.
